Redefining Freedom and Liberation with Lauryn Henley
Let me ask you a question…
What if the “freedom” we’ve been chasing – financial freedom, time freedom, freedom from burnout, freedom to say no – isn’t actually the point?
In this week’s episode of Unapologetically Yours, I sat down with the incredible Lauryn Henley, a spiritual teacher, liberation guide, and one of the clearest voices I know when it comes to personal and collective healing.
This conversation will challenge you – in the best way possible. Because Lauryn doesn’t just drop wisdom (though she does, constantly). She invites us to reimagine everything from how we live, to how we serve, how we relate to one another, how we define our success and worth, and so much more.
Lauryn and I talked about the difference between freedom – which so many of us were taught to pursue –and liberation, which is something much deeper. Freedom, as Lauryn shared, is often defined individually. It’s about doing what you want, when you want, with no restrictions.
And let me tell you—Lauryn doesn’t just talk about liberation. She lives it!
“Liberation is about reclaiming the parts of ourselves that we were taught to exile.”
In this episode, you’ll hear about:
Why “freedom” as we know it isn’t enough
What it means to live in interdependence
The spiritual shift from force to power
How codependency and hyperindividualism keep us disconnected
The real work of building lives—and businesses—rooted in liberation
… and so much more!
My Key Takeaways from Lauryn:
Liberation > Freedom. I’ve always loved the word freedom, but Lauryn helped me see that what I’m actually after, what so many of us are craving, is liberation. Freedom is often individualistic. Liberation is relational. It’s not just about doing whatever we want, it’s about creating a world where everyone can thrive, belong, and innovate. That reframe changed everything for me.
Wholeness is a prerequisite for service. This one made me emotional. For years I’ve been someone who gives and gives and gives, but Lauryn reminds us in this episode that true service doesn’t come from depletion - it comes from overflow. When we’re fragmented or burned out, giving becomes a transaction or an obligation. But when we’re whole, service becomes sacred.
Our culture has no vision for interdependence. This really made me think. Lauryn talked about how we live in a world that either glorifies hyper-independence (“I don’t need anyone”) or gets stuck in codependence (“I need you to be okay so I can be okay”). Interdependence is the space where we each have agency and we hold responsibility to one another, and is something most of us have never seen modeled. Lauryn is actively building that vision, and it’s stunning.
We can’t heal what we’re not conscious of. Lauryn discusses the Map of Consciousness by David R. Hawkins, which charts emotional states like shame, fear, courage, and joy. She explains how shifting from force to power is a practice… and it starts with awareness.
There’s no one right way to “be” a healer. Lauryn’s story gives us permission to be in the process. Lauryn explains how she’s still learning who she is, still integrating the pieces of her story. That even though she’s a leader, a guide, a teacher - she’s human. And I think that’s something we all need to remember. There’s no perfect version of you that you need to arrive at before you’re allowed to speak, serve, lead, or love. You don’t have to wait until you’ve “figured it all out” to be impactful. (P.S.…if you’ve been hiding your healing gifts away from the world - you need to hear this!!)
You can listen to our full conversation here:
If you take one thing away, it’s this: You don’t need to do more, be more, give more in order to be enough. You don’t have to wait until the world gives you permission to live aligned, to lead boldly, or to love with your whole heart.
Liberation starts within you.
And it expands when we do it together.
